GROW YOUR OWN TOPPINGS
Did you know you could grow a pizza right in your garden?  Okay, so you can’t really grow a pizza, but you can grow the yummy toppings. A cool way to do this is to make your garden actually look like a pizza!

I use an old wagon wheel to give the pizza garden it’s shape.  In each hole, or “slice,” you can grow a different vegetable to put on your pizza.
Here’s how you do it:
  1.  Begin by clearing out an area for growing a bunch of different types of vegetables and herbs. Look for a spot that gets at least four hours of sun a day.
  2. Place an old wagon wheel firmly in the dirt. If you don’t have a wheel don’t worry. You can use rocks, bricks, or cedar mulch to outline a circle.
  3. Fill the slices with good soil for the best crops.
  4. Fill each slice with vegetables and herbs that make great pizza toppings.
  5. Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help keep the weeds out.

There are a gazillion things you could grow in your pizza garden. Try tomatoes, bell peppers, basil, oregano, onions, rosemary, spinach, zucchini and even corn!

Roma tomatoes in the summer are good in a pizza garden because they’re small, grow fast, and have a thick meaty skin, which adds texture to your pizza.

Oregano is a perennial herb, which means you can keep getting more oregano from the same plant year after year.  Oregano gives pizza a wonderful smell.

Yellow squash is colorful and when you slice it really thin, it cooks perfectly on a pizza.

My taste buds always get excited by basil, so I think you should always add in one or two basil plants to every pizza garden. Sweet basil is the yummiest!

Even though there’s no such thing as a pepperoni shrub yet, I promise you’ll enjoy your homegrown pizza.
If it’s too cold now to start a pizza garden, you should consider growing one inside.  Pre-order an Herbie from AeroGarden® Kids on Amazon and you can get started right in the middle of winter!

The kids and I helped with the development of the hydroponic system and inside the kit is an activity book I authored with a bunch more ideas!

Bon Appetit!

Thanks for the tip use roma tomatoes in the summer when creating a wagon wheel pizza garden. Having tomatoes that can grow fast are the types of tomatoes I want to grow this upcoming summer. I'll have to start looking at wagon wheels for sale so I can get going on preparing a garden.
