Printable Ruler

Tracking the progress of your garden plants is a practice in patience that can actually become an exciting life science and math lesson...

Use our printable ruler (if you can't find one handy), and create a simple week log with your kids.

  1. Pick a day of the week. Maybe Saturday mornings when everyone is making breakfast, or Wednesday night before homework, whatever works best for your family.
  2. Create a simple table to keep track of the weeks. I have a twelve week grid on my printable ruler, but a hand drawn log will work just as well.
  3. One time per week measure the growth in half inches or whole inches and mark it on your grid. This is a good way to learn estimating and not get caught up in the hard part of learning metric increments on the ruler. Discuss with your child why they think the plant may or may not have grown. Did you remember to water it enough? Was it cold outside, did a critter take a few bites, you get the idea.
